Project Description
Ely Country Park is a popular open space with a number of features, including a childrens play area, sculptured walking routes and spectacular view of Ely Cathedral.
The area is a part of the Ely Wildspace green corridor, a protected area that is managed to provide benefits to wildlife and local people. It has been awarded the prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag Award because of the hard work and maintenance undertaken by East Cambridgeshire District Council and an army of volunteers.

The Challenge
Due to the popularity of the site, daily bin collections are vital to prevent littering. Unfortunately because of the limited width of the path the council’s vehicle found many of the turns too narrow causing them to run off the path damaging the surrounding grassed area.
To remedy this by extending the tarmac surface was deemed too costly, and not in keeping with the character of the park.
The chosen solution had to be in keeping with the character of the park but also had the added challenge of successfully managing the relevent areas so that the work could be done efficiently with minimal disruption to visitors. Any manintenance to be done would have to fit around both public and school holidays as these are peak times for the parks popularity. The restrictions around the work area had to be minimal to maintain accessability while at the same time ensuring visitors safety throughout the contract period.

Solution
ABG value engineered the original design to reduce cost without compromising performance. ABG’s Sudspave was selected to be installed, filled and seeded to provide a grassed finish. ABG’s partner company Geogreen tendered for and were awarded the contract to provide a turnkey package. This included provision of all plant and materials to facilitate the installation of the Sudspave to a number of locations across the park. Geogreen’s detailed knowledge of the product and experience of similar installations made it possible for the project to be completed with minimal disruption to the visiting public. Geogreen Installation teams are highly trained, and their knowledge ensured that the Sudspave was installed and seeded to allow the areas to establish grass fully and quickly.
